The presidents of SADC's pharmaceutical societies gathered at the CSIR Convention Centre in Pretoria on 26 and 27 April 2013. Lesotho; Mauritius; Namibia; the host, South Africa; Zambia and Zimbabwe attended the conference. The meeting was facilitated and chaired by Dr Johann Kruger, President of the Pharmaceutical Society of South Africa. After welcoming participants, he highlighted pharmacy challenges and successes experienced by South Africa. He also expressed appreciation to the Southern African Regional Programme on Access to Medicines (SARPAM) for its partial sponsorship, as well as participation.
This month, I explore one of my favourite topics: patient non-adherence. I had the privilege of reminiscing over old times with a senior member of the pharmacy community. We had a particularly interesting chat about patient adherence and how this could be addressed from a practical point of view. This is a serious problem that has been around ever since the first remedy was prescribed. Is it getting worse or better? Are there solutions?
