oa SA Pharmaceutical Journal - An approach to gastroprotective analgesia : review

Abstract

As a class, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) comprise traditional nonselective NSAIDs and selective cyclo-oxygenase-2 inhibitors. NSAIDs are among the most widely used medications in the world because of their demonstrated efficacy in reducing pain, fever and inflammation. NSAIDs have been used for the management of a variety of clinical disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, musculoskeletal injuries, dysmenorrhoea, headaches and dental pain. However, the gastrointestinal toxicity associated with nonselective NSAIDs may cause side-effects that range from mild dyspepsia to gastrointestinal ulceration.
