oa SA Pharmaceutical Journal - A review of proton-pump inhibitors : review

The introduction of proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) in the late 1980s optimised the medical treatment of acid-related disorders. PPIs have superseded the use of histamine-2-receptor antagonists in patients with moderate to severe gastric acid-related diseases, as well as for the prophylaxis of upper gastrointestinal injury, for example, with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. PPIs have been found to be successful in improving the symptoms and complications of acid-peptic diseases owing to their potency and effectiveness, and in having a positive impact on the quality of life of people with these conditions.
