oa SA Pharmaceutical Journal - The truth is what you believe : president's message

Last month I referred to knowledge as being built on perception, on what we have seen, heard, read, experienced or learned after experimentation. The Marcus Aurelius quote, "Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth", highlights the fact that it is even more so for what we perceive as the truth. Many authors have referred to the Talmudic words, "We do not see things as they are. We see things as we are" and according to Oscar Wilde "The truth is rarely pure and never simple". From the Bible we learn that "The truth will set you free" and various authors have subsequently also reminded us that before this happens, it could hurt, make you angry, and require deep introspection and acceptance. With this as background, we have to accept that there will be 'different versions of the truth', shaping it for the benefit of the profession would be the way forward.
