Abstract

This monograph is a general review of the available literature on the springbok, Antidorcas marsupialis. It includes observations made by some of the first European explorers, as well as descriptionptions by modern behavioural, physiological and morphological studies on this antelope. Special attention is given to the springbok's adaptability to arid environments with unpredictable resources of food and water. The mobile springbok can serve as an example of how evolutionary behavioural and morphological characteristics have enabled it to adapt to temperature changes and an arid environment.
