Abstract

An increasing number of potent drugs are now available for the treatment of hypertension. Until the precise aetiology of hypertension is known, symptomatic treatment is the only possible treatment. Treatment of severe hypertension greatly diminishes the risk of cardiac, cerebral and renal complications. Treatment has to be carefully evaluated in each patient to avoid putting a patient on unnecessary lifelong drug treatment. Experiences in the treatment of hypertension under African conditions are cited.
