Abstract

In the course of survey of African patients with neurological disease there occurred a number of patients who appeared to suffer from an unusual form of neurosyphilis. These patients were mainly young men with an acute onset of mental illness or epilepsy. Their blood Wassermann reactions were usually strongly positive, but the C.S.F. showed little abnormality apart from weakly positive serological reactions in some cases. Treatment usually produced rapid improvement. While acute encephalitic forms of neurosyphilis are reported to occur occasionally among Europeans, this report emphasises the frequency with which this syndrome occurs in Africans. This represents one facet of the different picture which neurosyphilis presents in Africa.
