Abstract

A pilot study of the variations in the arrangements of the visceral branches of the abdominal aorta in 16 African still-born children ( eleven males and five females) provides no evidence that the arrangement of the vessels is different from that descriptionbed in standard textbooks of anatomy based on the dissection of European subjects. The study provides confirmation of the observation of Cauldwell and Anson I that there is a striking constancy in the length of the band of aortic surface from which the visceral branches are derived. If the longitudinal and circumferential co-ordinates of the points of origin from the aorta of its visceral branches can be confirmed in a further series of still-born children, it will be possible to descriptionbe features concerning the orientation of the origins of the visceral branches of the aorta as
