oa Central African Journal of Medicine - Fibrosarcoma and other related sarcomas (a retrospective study of cases at Harare Central Hospital, Salisbury, for the Years 1967-1971)

Volume 19, Issue 11
  • ISSN : 0008-9176

This is a retrospective study of 26 case histories of fibrosarcoma, 14 cases of other sarcomas and two cases of benign fibromatosis admitted to Harare Central Hospital, Salisbury, from 1967- 1971. Sex and age distribution, presenting symptoms and signs are analysed. The duration of symptoms before first reporting to hospital is noted. Emphasis is laid on the need for adequate biopsy before definitive treatment is embarked upon since review of the histology has shown that approximately one-third of tumours originally labelled fibrosarcoma are in fact other types of sarcoma. Methods of treatment, outcome and recurrences were noted. Survival rates were difficult to work out due to poor follow-up.
