Comparison of cardiac function assessed from systolic time intervals in Europeans and Africans in Rhodesia
Author J. Tsomondo, E. & JonesSource: Central African Journal of Medicine 20, pp 137 –140 (1974)More LessSystolic time intervals were recorded at rest from 182 African and 197 European men. The ratio: pre-ejection period to left ventricular ejection time (PEP /L VET), which can be related to left ventricular contractility and ejection fraction, was found to be significantly (P < 0,0001) lower in 160 male African office and factory workers than in age-matched Europeans. This difference is environmental rather than genetic, because male African students who have adopted a Western style of life resembled Europeans, and showed the same differences from age-matched African workers.
