Abstract

Diverticular disease of the colon is a rare condition in the African and has only been reported once previously in Rhodesia. The second case of diverticulosis in a Salisbury African is presented here. The patient was a 50-year-old, obese male who was admitted with a short history of rectal bleeding. Barium enema revealed the presence of a number of diverticulae in the ascending colon. The aetiology of diverticulosis was discussed particularly in relation to diet but it was concluded that the diverticulosis seen in this patient was probably of congenital origin.
