Abstract

Dr. Walter May had four sons, of whom three became doctors, and they were Aylmer William, Herbert and Harold. The other son, who was not a doctor was called Frank. This paper concerns Aylmer William. The father died of a disease which was common in those days, namely enteric fever (typhoid), and it was to transpire that brother Herbert, who later became Superintendent of the Hospital in Pretoria, was to die of the same disease. Those students who may happen to read this article should make a mental note of how common the enteric group of diseases was in those days, and cast a passing thought to the too easy possibility of this group of diseases raising its head again in the Africa of today.
