Abstract

Medicine is closely bound up with religion in traditional African thought. The two are inseparable because, in an ancestral religion, the anger of a spirit elder reveals itself in sickness or even in death. Thus almost any illness may be attributed to an upset of one of these spirits or to the evil powers of a witch. Therefore medicine or the need for it is of utmost importance in the minds of the Shona.
