Abstract

The Medical Council of Rhodesia at its quarterly meeting on 2nd November, 1976, received a document from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rhodesia in which it was proposed to make substantial alterations in the curriculum for the teaching of the M.B.Ch.B. degree, which degree is currently recognised by the Council Among the alterations suggested was a proposal to upgrade psychiatry to a professional barrier examination subject, to place greater emphasis on general practice and community medicine and to reduce the undergraduate period of training to five years and extend the compulsory period of internship to two years. This internship would cover not only medicine and surgery as at present but also would include in the second year four months paediatrics, four months obstetrics and gynaecology and four months primary medical care.
