Abstract

An effective means of interrupting the life cycle of the Schistosome parasite is by controlling the populations of intermediate host snails. The literature contains numerous examples which demonstrate that transmission of bilharziasis has been reduced or eliminated as a result of effective snail control measures. There are two main reasons for this lack of official interest elsewhere. The first is cost, the second is insufficient understanding of the epidemiology of the disease among national policy makers and is attributable to inadequate basic information available at the local level.
