Abstract

Our findings indicate that in the early active phase of Schistosoma haematobium infection in the urinary tract, when ova, blood and leucocytes are excreted, a superimposed bacterial, infection is apparently very' uncommon. In the later more chronic phase of the disease, when there is thickening and granulomatous tissue and ova excretion is either absent or scanty, a secondary bacteriuria may not uncommonly supervene. It is suggested that schistosome ova or a product thereof in the urine inhibits bacterial infection.
