Abstract

For many years control of' human bilharzias infection has relied heavily on treatment of established (i.e. patent) infections in man, on chemical and environmental control of the snail intermediate hosts, and on improvements in sanitation and the avoidance wherever possible of man-water contact. This articles covers one aspect of control which has received little attention until recent years is the prevention of infection, either by means of vaccines or by the regular use of drugs having a protective (prophylactic) effect.
