Abstract

As a layman I crave pardon for any errors or misinterpretations of a medical nature in this paper. I have not distinguished the various forms of malaria nor have I specifically referred to the modifications of goitre. I can only echo the words of Boussingault when writing about goitre: ""but before broaching the matter I should begin by making it known that I have not the necessary medical knowledge to deal suitably with such a subject."" an expression characteristic of his lifelong modesty.
