Abstract

Twenty-eight cases of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase deficiency from Harare Hospital were reviewed. The clinical associations of G-6-PD found elsewhere occurred, notably the eight cases of typhoid and also renal failure, viral hepatitis, pneumonia and neonatal jaundice. Widespread use of a malarial prophylactic containing Dapsone may lead to increased haemolysis in deficient individuals. These associations remain conjectural at present. G-6-PD deficiency should be considered in all cases of anaemia, jaundice, haemoglobinuria and drug reactions seen in Africans.
