Abstract

Road traffic accidents constitute a major public health problem throughout the civilised world and in recent years their numbers have reached epidemic proportions in most countries. Further, the worldwide increases in mortality and morbidity resulting from road accidents are out of proportion to the increase in number of vehicles, traffic density and distance travelled. The disproportionate involvement of the 16 � 24 -ear age group in road accidents is particularly stressing.
