Our own interest in these diseases started with the observation that while asthma seemed relatively common in the African population, bronchitis was rare. We set out to study this in two ways. First we looked at asthmatics from a clinical standpoint at Harare Hospital, but, realising that these patients were not necessarily representative of all asthmatics we decided to study the prevalence of these diseases in the general population. The population we chose was that of the African Township of Rimuka in Gatooma.
