The patient was a soldier aged 23 who for the previous three and a half weeks had been in the bush and sleeping out without any special covering. He returned to Salisbury on the 24th February, 1976, his left ear started to ache on the 25th of February and he reported to the Medical Officer, Captain M. A. Roberts on the 26th who noted a tick in the ear. He wm; referred and examination showed a tick apparently attached to the posterior wall of the external auditory canal on the left and close to the tympanic membrane.
