Abstract

Over the last 25 years a variety of different titles have been given to the general practitioner, each having its advocates and its period of popularity and each striving to descriptionbe one aspect of the doctor's responsibility in a way that would identify how general practice differs from other branches of medicine. Thus phrases such as the primary care physician, the doctor of first contact, the family doctor, and the general practitioner have each sought to descriptionbe and to emphasise a different responsibility.
