Abstract

Tissue reaction to onchocerca volvulus in skin nodules in 101 patients is descriptionbed. The adult worms have been seen in varying stages of degeneration exciting pronounced inflammatory reaction. The parasite has not been observed within discernible lymphatics having been found mainly within loose subcutaneous connective tissue. In two cases they were located in striated muscle and in a solitary instance within the synovium. Local migration from subcutaneous tissue or through venous channel may explain this phenomenon. The finding illustrates that the parasite essentially is extra lymphatic. Formation of nodule would appear to be purely a local response to the dead or degenerating parasite. Variation in response may reflect an altered immunological balance between the host and the parasite.
