Abstract

Patients with truly refractory ascites or the hepato-renal syndrome can now effectively be treated by insertion of the LeVeen peritoneovenous shunt. The shunt should not be undertaken in those with encephalopathy marked jaundice or severe bleeding diathesis. The shunt brings about rapid loss of weight, decrease in abdominal girth, increase in urine flow, natriuresis and correction of hyperaldosteronism.
