Abstract

Injudicious use of alcohol by teenagers and young people appears to be associated with many problems, both for the individuals concerned and for the societies in which they live. A review of recent literature reveals that the trend towards earlier drinking and to increasing consumption at an early age is causing concern in many countries. Published evidence of actual and potential dangers related to increased alcohol usage among teenagers in recent years has been reviewed. It is suggested that Rhodesia/Zimbabwe faces similar dangers now and in the future. Education programmes are called for which must be realistic and relevant to the needs of young people.
