Abstract

We believe that when rural populations, often with no previous experience of rubella or measles, move to towns or cities, there is a danger of epidemics from both diseases. The rubella epidemic maybe missed for reasons outlined. The health authorities in Zimbabwe Rhodesia were well aware of the dangers of measles epidemics in protected villages, and a vaccination programme for all children on admission to the villages was instituted. We would suggest that similar attention be paid to women of child-bearing age who, if they have to move from rural areas into towns or cities, should be offered rubella vaccine.
