Abstract

A large variety of asbestos products are used on the Rhodesia Railways both in the maintenance of its motive power and rolling stock and in the fixed structures. Since the earliest years in the history of the organization, asbestos has provided the main insulating material, It is of interest therefore to report four cases of asbestosis and two of mesothelioma amongst the staff of this organisation, in a period of one year. All of these cases occurred in persons who were not exposed to high concentrations of asbestos dust, and in four of the six cases the only contact of any measurable quantity of asbestos was with asbestos string and braid.
