Abstract

The writer has been responsible for the treatment and control of tuberculosis in the African community of Greater Salisbury since September, 1974. During that time measures were taken to co-ordinate the treatment and control of the disease to make them more effective. This paper is a review of the years 1975-77 inclusive, whose object is to consider the effects of planning and reorganisation on the incidence and treatment of tuberculosis, especially the pulmonary form of, the disease, in an urban situation in a developing country. It is emphasised that all changes including the development of services and initiation of research projects were carried out without any increase in funds, staff or other resources - a most important consideration for any developing country.
