Abstract

Attention is drawn to the not inconsiderable number of people whose abdominal pain remains undiagnosed despite, in some cases, intensive investigation. It is suggested that some of these patients might have had a diagnosis offered if the doctor had considered tissues other than the viscera. In particular, it is suggested that many patients with abdominal pain which remains undiagnosed may be suffering from referred pain. The referred pain may, in turn, cause psychological manifestations.
