Abstract

The problem of assessing treatment in duodenal ulcer is a difficult one. The natural history is characterised by spontaneous remissions and relapses. There is ample evidence to show that duodenoscopy is superior to radiology in the diagnosis of duodenal ulcers, whether producing haemorrhage or not. In this study, a statistically significant reduction in ulcer size was found in the patients on Eglonyl, but was also found in patients in placebo. The disappearance of the ulcer in the patients on Eglonyl compared with those on placebo was not statistically significant. On the other hand, there were significantly more patients in the eglonyl group demonstrating reduction in ulcer size so that possibly longer treatment would have produced a correspondingly greater disappearance rate.
