Abstract

A new era opened with the discovery of the febrifugal properties of Peruvian bark. Gelfand notes that Bernardino Ramazzini (1633.1714), professor of medicine in Modena and Padua and the author of the first comprehensive account of occupational diseases, likened the discovery of cinchona bark in medicine, to that of gunpowder in warfare: both were irreversibly transformed. Gelfand also draws the parallel, in the discovery of cinchona, with the effect of the discovery, in our own time, of antibiotics.
