Abstract

Sixty children aged between one and three years with the clinical diagnosis of kwashiorkor (Davidson et al, 1965) were treated in two groups. Those patients admitted to be treated under the care of our colleague were given the conventional ward kwashiorkor diet. The other group was of patients treated under our care but these patients were given nhopi instead. Both groups received the same supportive treatment. Our results show that nhopi can be used as a substitute diet to treat all grades of kwashiorkor and since it is very cheap and easy to prepare, it is recommended for use in central, general, district and rural hospitals.
