Abstract

Nine years admissions for thyroid disease have been examined. It appears that in 64% of the 418 cases that dietary iodine deficiency is the main cause of the disease. Malignancy was present in 8,8% of the goitres, follicular carcinoma being the commonest form seen. This form of carcinoma is most likely induced by the iodine deficiency state. A plea is made for the introduction by legislation of iodine in domestic salt used in this country.
