When there is much controversy over �the relative merits of different treatments of a disease or condition, it is usually fair to say that none has any real influence on the final outcome. In no area is this truer than in the use of anti-diarrhoeals and antibiotics in the treatment of acute gastro-enteritis (AGE) in children. The blanket use of these agents may shift the focus of attention away from fluid and electrolyte replacement and nutrition, which are undoubtedly the most important aspects of treatment.
