Abstract

The cerebrospinal fluid of 50 consecutive African pre-term infants was examined. All samples were xanthochromic and the cell concentrations were higher than in adults or older children. The fluid from 4 babies (8%) was frankly bloody. The results are generally in accordance with other studies on similar groups of Caucasian infants, and indicate that cell concentrations in the cerebrospinal fluid of such babies must be interpreted with great care.
