Abstract

Simple indicators of health status of communities are discussed. It is suggested that the necessary date should be capable of easy collection at the periphery of the health services and interpreted by the local health team. From the simple data collected, community diagnostic hypotheses may be made, investigated and followed by appropriate action. It is emphasised that the mere provision of a health service does not automatically improve the health of people.
