Abstract

Five cases of anthrax meningitis, previously an extremely rare condition in Zimbabwe, are descriptionbed. The frequency in various areas and modes of transmission of anthrax are discussed. The main clinical manifestations in these five cases and in other reported series are considered, the most consistent features being meningeal signs, haemorrhagic cerebro-spinal fluid, short duration of illness and fatal outcome. In all five cases Bacillus anthracis was detected on microscopy or culture of the cerebro-spinal fluid. Immediate treatment with high-dose penicillin was ineffective.
