Abstract

Psychiatric services throughout Zimbabwe have seen little development during the past 10 years but facilities in Mashonaland are particularly inadequate. In his report for the year ending 31st December 1966, the then Secretary for Health wrote: ""A very urgent necessity is the provision of additional accommodation for mental patients, particularly for Africans, amongst whom the incidence of mental disturbance is increasing each year, as more and more of this community becomes caught up in the web of urban and industrial life"".
