Abstract

Scanning the literature on tungiasis, it is not clear how widespread is infection with the Jigger (or Chigoe) flea, Tunga penetrans, in Africa. It is stated that the infection was endemic to the Pacific, spread to South America and thence travelled to West Africa with sand ballast. In Africa it established itself, spread through ""tropical"" Africa and more recently reached India when Indian troops returned home after fighting in the Abyssinian Campaign (Marshall, 1973).
