The title of this contribution is 'Eating for living and longevity in South African cultural groups.' What has been said for Whites also relates in varying measure to the Coloured, Indian and Black populations, more especially to those whose diet and life style are becoming progressively more sophisticated. Although environmental risk factors, whether dietary or non-dietary, may have different weights and connotations in different ethnic groups, broadly, the message is the same for all the populations. Whether adopted voluntarily, or imposed involuntarily, there is no doubt that changes in diet and changes in life style could improve well-being and longevity.
