Abstract

In this first article on the Unified National Health Information System, we have given a historical background of the health information system as it existed in Zimbabwe 'before independence and as it exists to some extent at present; enumerated the major weak points of the present health information system; explained the need for changes in the system; discussed the changes which are planned and those which have already been implemented to enable the Ministry of Health to meet the perceived health needs of the majority of the population. Our next article will discuss the village health worker health information system in depth, using fascimiles of the actual forms and specific procedures for the collection of data and preparation of the forms.
