Abstract

Of 175 strains of N. gonorrhoeae included in this study 64 (37%) were shown to be penicillinase- producing. All of the strains were fully sensitive in vitro to rosoxacin and tetracycline. The incidence of PPNG has trebled in the last year, and the use of 8-lactam antibiotics as the first-line drug for the treatment of gonorrhea may thus have to be reconsidered. Alternative treatment regimes must take into account availability, cost, side-effects and patient compliance as well as sensitivity of the organism.
