Abstract

The icterometer is a simple device by which the severity of neonatal jaundice may be quantified. It is little used in Zimbabwe perhaps because of doubts over reliability. Icterometer readings were more reliable at higher than lower bilirubin values and more valid in the hands of the experienced than the inexperienced observer.
