Abstract

A community survey of nutritional status of children under 5 years old in 4 areas in Harare and Chitungwiza showed a prevalence of total undernutrition (weight for age) varying between 29 and 51%. ""Stunting"" (low-height for age) ranged from 44 to 62% and ""wasting"" (lowweight for height) from 7-18%. Children aged between 1 and 2 years were most affected in all areas. Major aetiological factors were rural domicile, late introduction of solids, and low family income.
