Abstract

In a prospective study of bacterial and parasitic agents of acute diarrhoeal diseases in Lagos, Nigeria, Aeromonas hydrophila was isolated from the stools of six diarrhoeaic patients. Two of them were infants less than 2 years of age while three were aged above 70 and the sixth was a 39-year old male with liver cirrhosis. Clinical significance was ascribed to the A. hydrophila isolated from all six patients. Five of the isolates were haemolytic and cytotoxic and all were beta-Iactamase positive. Their resistance to mainly beta-lactam antibiotics was not surprising. The opportunistic pathogenetic role of A. hydrophila in compromised patients is re-emphasized.
