Abstract

Based upon the ten years' experience of the author in the southern region of the eastern African continental rift, this study explores the possibility that the characteristically early. menopause of humans arose as an adaptation of human ancestors to the dry season on the savanna. Although fewer numbers of children would have been born, the effect of .such an early menopause is suggested to have been a significant reduction of both maternal and infant mortality rates.
