Abstract

The antibody response to attenuated live virus measles vaccine (Rimevax) was assessed in 280 children between the ages of 6 and 12 months. Blood samples were taken before and again three weeks after immunization and tested for haemagglutination inhibition antibodies to measles virus. Children less than 11 months of age were found to have suboptimal seroconversion rates. The present routine in Zimbabwe of vaccinating children against measles at 9 months gives protection to no more than half of them. It is recommended that routine administration of measles vaccine in Zimbabwe should be restricted to children over the age of 11 months.
