Abstract

Blood transfusion in most developing countries is largely based in the urban areas. The rural areas have little transfusion service, if any at all. Some mission stations transfuse patients with donations taken from relatives, while some hospitals send blood samples from the patient into the city transfusion service for crossmatching. The latter is time consuming and of no use in an emergency. The future development of blood transfusion needs to be in the direction of the rural areas.
