Abstract

A 25 year-old woman presented with the sudden onset of akinetic mutism. The characteristic clinical features of subarachnoid haemorrhage were absent but a lumbar puncture showed a uniformly bloody cerebrospinal fluid with xanthochromic supernatant. Clinicians should consider spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage as a possible cause of acute onset of akinetic mutism.
